Wood used for our blocks
To make our cutting boards, blocks and kitchen furniture, we mainly use hornbeam wood and beech, two robust and local species, carefully selected from French and German suppliers.
The worktop is mainly made from hornbeam wood. The belts and bases are made from beech.
Hornbeam wood
Hornbeam is a tree of the Betulaceae family (Alder, Birch, and Hornbeam), and is difficult to split due to its slow growth. We can make butcher’s blocks, benches, yokes or wheel hubs. Its dense and marcescent foliage (which does not fall in autumn) can be confused with that of the beech.
Beech wood
Versatile and homogeneous wood, ideal for turning, polishing and furniture. With 9% forest cover in France, it is very popular for its durability and aesthetics. The beech, is a tree of the family Fagaceae, because the fruit is held in a "cupule." Because of its homogeneity, beech wood was widely used by woodworkers, turners, and manufacturers of complex parts. We also used to make the old clothes pegs of our grandmothers, before the invasion of polymers. Today, it is used in carpentry (furniture, flooring) provided that it is carefully dried (tendency to shrinkage). Beech is used in 14% of furniture made in France, just behind oak. Beech covers 9% of the French forest, behind oak and Scots pine.
